How to start a T-shirt business in India in 2026: a step-by-step guide
Starting a T-shirt brand is one of the lowest-cost ways to enter fashion. You can begin with a small batch, test designs, and grow into bulk production. Here is the order we recommend to new brands who come to our Kolkata unit.
1. Pick a niche you can describe in one line
“Oversized streetwear for college students in Kolkata” is a niche. “T-shirts for everyone” is not. A clear niche decides your fabric, fit, price and where you sell.
2. Choose fabric weight (GSM) and fit
GSM is the weight of the fabric per square metre. 180 GSM cotton suits everyday round-neck tees and events. 240 GSM gives the heavier drape that oversized and acid-wash streetwear needs. Ask your manufacturer for both samples before you decide.
3. Decide your printing method
- DTF – vibrant, stretchable, good for multi-colour logos, works on cotton and polyester.
- DTG – soft-feel prints for detailed art and short runs.
- Screen printing – cheapest per piece on large single-design orders.
- Embroidery – premium look for logos on polos, hoodies and caps.
4. Order samples, then a small first batch
Approve a mock-up, check one sample per size, then order a first batch you can realistically sell in 4–6 weeks.
5. Register and price
Get your GST registration when needed, and price so that manufacturing is roughly a third of your selling price, leaving room for shipping, returns and marketing.
6. Sell where your buyers already are
Instagram, your own website, Amazon and Flipkart, and local shops. Many brands start with drop shipping (see our drop shipping guide).
